Red Rockers
by The Dils, feat. Tony Kinman, bass/vocals
Tony Kinman (1956 to 2018) was an American 'punk rock' singer and bassist, with 'The Dils'. Anthony Preston Kinman was born in 1956 in Carlsbad, California, USA. Along with his guitarist brother Chip, he formed one of America’s first 'punk rock' bands 'The Dils' in 1977, based in San Francisco until their eventual demise in 1980. The brothers then moved to Austin, Texas, where they joined local guitarist Alejandro Escovedo in forming 'Rank & File', a 'punk'/'country' crossover project playing what would later be called 'Americana'. Their 1982 debut album "Sundown" was released on the pioneering independent label 'Slash', and came to be widely considered a classic forerunner of the 'alt/country' genre which became more prevalent in the 1990s. Following a three-album run, the Kinmans left to form 'Blackbird', a 'noise pop' duo playing music in the same vein as 'The Jesus and Mary Chain'. The brothers renamed themselves again later in the same decade, morphing into 'Cowboy Nation', an acoustic duo performing original 'cowboy ballads', plus newer songs written in a similar way. Throughout their career, Kinman's bass-playing and baritone voice were considered to be the anchor of all the brothers' musical endeavours. His most recent work had been producing the debut album by Chip's latest band 'Ford Madox Ford', but he had also been notable for other contributions in music, such as writing the 1986 song "Born Yesterday" for 'The Everly Brothers' and then the track "Mr Machinery Operator" in 1993 for the 'alt rock' group 'fIREHOSE'. Tony Kinman died from cancer at a hospice in San Diego on May 3rd 2018, aged 62. http://acltv.com/2018/05/04/r-i-p-tony-kinman-of-rank-file/

† REST IN PEACE †
Hundreds of very talented musicians pass away every year, some without much recognition at all. On "Rest In Peace", I aim to give them a fitting 'send-off', with a decent Tribute. I hope you will join me in marking their passing.....
