Where You Gonna Land (Next Time You Fall Off of Your Mountain)
by Nova Mob (Featuring Grant Hart)
Grant Hart, who died on Thursday, is best known for his drumming, singing, and songwriting in the seminal Minneapolis hardcore/punk trio Hüsker Dü. As that group's ten-year career wore on, Hart compositions and lead vocals became more frequent alongside those of bandmate Bob Mould, and were typically my favorite parts of Hüsker Dü records. Hart released four solo studio albums between 1989 and 2013, leaving his two albums fronting his own band Nova Mob (1991-1994) arguably the most overlooked part of his discography. The first Nova Mob record, The Last Days of Pompeii, presents Hart's usual rough-and-tumble pop-infused stylings via a complex if impenetrable conceptual theme about the lost Roman city. It arrived on shelves in 1991 just as the US branch of the Rough Trade label was collapsing, rendering it instantly out of print and difficult to find until its reissue in 2011. It's one of my favorite post-Dü works by Hart, and here is one of its most rocking cuts.
