Somehow in the '80s and '90s I never got around to buying the Pixies' singles, which always had interesting bonus tracks. I've long since acquired all the songs on various compilations, but when I see the original singles in used bins I still like to pick them up. I recently bought the 4-track CD release of "Velouria," the lead-off single from their third full-length album, 1990's Bossanova. The album was released the week I first went off to university, and so it was the first album I bought during my college years. I don't frequently return to Pixies' music, but when I do I am reminded that their original incarnation remains one of the strongest, most consistently excellent American rock bands of the last 30 years. It's been a delight hearing "Velouria" a lot this week. I spent a lot of time earlier this year with the 25th-anniversary expanded reissue of their 1989 album Doolittle; I would love to see an expansion of Bossanova. Fingers crossed for its 30th anniversary.
