Workin' Man Blues
by Merle Haggard and the Strangers
Hadn't posted a Merle tune for a while, but my boy and I were watching that episode of King of the Hill where Peggy gets Bill involved in a pyramid marketing scheme. There's one scene where Bill is lugging around his boxes of MetaLife, and they play the amazing guitar solo from Workin' Man Blues.

This live performance is terrific, though it misses that defining cowbell percussion clunk. Playing the solo around the 2-minute mark is Roy Nichols. What I didn't know is that it's James Burton on the record (and on the KOTH scene). Apparently Burton, (legendary session hotshot, and Elvis's touring geetarman) invented the "chicken pickin'" guitar style, together with Phil Baugh. Nichols, Merle's on-stage guitarist for years, a virtuouso in his own right, developed and perfected the style...

Tim Ungs
Countrypolitan, ex-cosmopolitan (NYC, London, Sydney, Minneapolis). Tastes broad, bordering on random. Pop music is good. Can get a little funny about Merle Haggard, Ronnie Lane, and Roger Miller.
