AheadByEcho's current selection is:
2:19
by Tom Waits
This track comes from Orphans, a three disc set (or a 7 album box, initially) that was subtitled Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards. The set was not unlike a garage sale. The songs came from a variety of projects be they tribute albums, movie soundtracks, B-Sides or other artists who released a song prior to an official Tom Waits version. 2:19 first appeared in 2001 on the John Hammond album Wicked Grin, an album of Tom Waits songs that was produced by Waits. To be expected, Hammond’s take on the song is cleaner than Waits and I don’t think it grooves anywhere near what Waits’ own version does. Hammond is one of three artists who released an album consisting of nothing but Waits songs, the others being Holly Cole (Temptation) and Scarlett Johansson (Anywhere I Lay My Head). (I’ll vouch for that Johansson album as a left field oddity that is worth your time and that features David Bowie as backup singer!)
