On Saturday, I was in the midst of eating lunch when the doorbell rang. Upon opening the front door, I was greeted by an elderly lady, dressed in black and clutching a wicker basket.

After a smile and a hello, the lady started to look me up and down and asked me if I'd ever met a real Romany gypsy before. She didn't wait for a response and then said the following:

"I can see that your mother had high hopes for you and that you also wanted to please her. Don't pay any heed to your neighbours, as I can tell that many of them are busy-bodies and are quite insincere. Do you think about what people say about you and do you just want contentment until the end of your days?"

Yet again, these were all seemingly questions that required no input from me, but this was merely just a brief pause in the dialogue.

"I have a number of handmade items, all created for nice people. People just like you. Why not browse my basket and see how you'd like to spend a fiver?”

The lady then whipped the knitted cover off her basket and revealed her merchandise.

“I know that as a good man you'd want to buy from a Romany. I'm not like those charlatans on the telly, with their big dresses and bad attitude. I'm from an ancient bloodline. Go on, see what I have."

At this point, I smiled and thanked the lady for stopping by, but that I wasn't looking to make any purchases today. It was at this point that the lady repeated her curious head to toe observation, but this time with a look of slight disdain.

"Have the type of afternoon that you deserve, my dear and may the luck you warrant be yours. Bye-bye, my love."

I bid the lady cheerio and went back to my lunch, chuckling at the exchange. But it did make me wonder if she was rattling out the same line to all of my neighbours and just how successful she is with that bizarre sales pitch.

Lurker and occasional twerker. I made a conscious decision, because of Kate Bush, to not run up hills.
