Why D'You Wanna (Let Me Down)
by The Erotik Kittens
One for @debutch's #debuts #debut theme, which I'm dedicating to the aforementioned strapping chap of the jukebox.

In the spring of 1987, my friend Amanda and I were spending lots of time in each other's company, swapping mix tapes and generally dissecting modern culture. We were both in the sixth form at school and had known each other from infancy.

One afternoon, after school, we were in Amanda's lounge listening to Radio 1 and we were slagging off some of the singles that were featured on the drive time show. Amanda's mother - fed up of our griping - set us the challenge of coming up with our own pop song, if we thought the featured artists on the radio really were that bad.

In an hour and a half, we wrote a basic melody and then plagiarised lyrics from various sources. At the weekend, we laid down the drum pattern, recorded the very basic and repetitive keyboard riff and bassline on the four track studio.

As the song was terrible, Amanda insisted I sang it. After playing our demo to Amanda's mum, she told us it wasn't as good as her favourites - Dead or Alive and Five Star - and it sounded like a dull b-side.

Amanda suggested that we sent the song on cassette to Samantha Fox's label, Jive Records, recommending it as a b-side for one of Ms. Fox's future hit singles. Imagine the royalties!

Needless to say, we never received a response from Foxy. But it did kickstart our recordings as The Erotik Kittens.

Lurker and occasional twerker. I made a conscious decision, because of Kate Bush, to not run up hills.
