when the party's over
by Billie Eilish
I don't generally dig on whatever the kids these days are listening to, having been an old curmudgeon since I was in my early 20s, but once in a while a depressed young person puts out some fairly insightful music and it catches me. I'm way far from the west- so the first time I heard anything about Billie Eilish was a few weeks ago when a review of her album showed up on my YouTube front page.

This is the first song I heard of the album, and I was instantly entranced. There's certain lines from this song that, when pulled out of context, just hit me super fucking hard, and the sadness in her voice is fully believable to me. With family in the north of the island and in America I'm on my own a lot. I could (and sometimes do) lie and say 'I like it like that'....

Alte Geist is the faux-appelation of an ex-Pennsylvanian resident self-banished to Asia. The Alte used to think that avoiding his life via intensive mediation was the way to do things, so he has accrued a great deal of music and cartoons and comic books and novels and podcasts and video games etc. That part of his life is over, or at least greatly reduced now, but he has found it's actually kind of nice to hear music when you've let go of the need to acquire it. Also, for those that remember all the Chinese oldies and such I used to post at TIMJ- they're over @WeePushkin now, on this very site.
