Felix Mendelssohn composed this in the autumn of 1825 as a birthday gift for his friend, the violin teacher Eduard Rietz.
(Prodigiously, he was only 16 when he wrote it; however, it was slightly revised in 1832 before its first public performance in January 1836 at the Leipzig Gewandhaus.)
