Rossini: La Cenerentola (ossia La bontà in trionfo) - Overture
by Zagreb Festival Orchestra
Part of a 'dramma giocoso' ('opera with jokes') first presented to the world at Rome's Teatro Valle on 25 January 1817. Needing a hurried replacement for another rejected work (sadly, vetoed by the Pope's official censor), the composer was encouraged to choose the character and story of Cinderella as the subject matter for his new attempt. To make the planned January 1817 premiere however, he was required to finish the score for it in double quick time, and managed to achieve this in twenty-four days during December 1816 (the librettist Jacopo Ferretti also did something similar in terms of speed as regards completing the text for the project).
Conductor: Michael Halász.
