Ruby Baby
by The Drifters
I had an especially tough year in 2000. I lost two dogs and two cats that year. They were old--fourteen, fifteen--and went to heaven. Just like people, our pets don't live forever. After six months or so, it was time to have another cat, another purring machine. So I went to the pound, and chose the one who reached through the cage to swat me. I noticed, too, that that cat had so much oomp that it had flipped over its food and water bowls, and had shredded the newspaper lining of its cage. That cat was gonna be mine. I'm attracted to spunk. The label on the cage indicated 1 or 2 years old, spayed, female. Sounds good to me. I signed the papers, gave my money, and was told they'd call me. Fine. Pick her up at X vet and she's yours. Will do. I'm excited to have adopted a new purring machine and go to the designated vet to pick her up. I filled out additional required papers and wrote down that her name would be Ruby. All good. The vet tells me the cat is in good health but she's a he. Oh really? I volunteered that I had not turned the cat upside down to confirm what the pound had indicated. So, I turned the 'b' in Ruby around and renamed him Rudy. He was a great cat and lived 15 years. He died a couple of years ago and I still miss him. This song is for Ruby, er, I mean Rudy.

In keeping with the #AprilMusicChallenge Ruby Baby is a song from my birth year.

The photo is Rudy sitting on the roof of my brother's dune buggy.
