MikeLowe's current selection is:
Duke of Earl
by Sha Na Na
Arguably, Sha Na Na were the strangest booking of the whole weekend at #Woodstock !! Apparently the band had been enjoyed by Jimi Hendrix a few months before the festival and he recommended them to be included.
The band were made up of university friends and only formed in early '69. They began as an acapella group called the Kingsmen, but quickly discovered there was already a popular band of that name (the "Louie Louie" fellas).
As can be seen by many of the bewildered faces of the audience, most of the "freaks" didn't know what to make of them (see the guys faces at 30 and 50 seconds....priceless). The band finally won over the audience and went down very well.
Many years later when he was interviewed, one of the founding members of the band is quoted as saying about their Woodstock gig, "That was truly amazing, to go out on stage and see this ocean of people, most of whom thought they were hallucinating: these guys in gold lame jumpsuits and greased back hair.”
I saw the band in concert about two years after their Woodstock appearance. They were great fun and were supported by the up and coming band "Uriah Heep"!!!!
This video is edited from their complete performance that day.
