by Agung Hercules
Agung Hercules (1968 to 2019) was an Indonesian actor and 'Dangdut' singer. Agung Santoso was born in Malang, Jawa Timur, Indonesia, on February 9th 1968. He had been part of a Malay orchestra in his hometown since the sixth grade of elementary school, and soon progressed to singing and writing his own songs. After re-developing his self-image through bodybuilding, he was among the best who practised in Malang, and was even ranked 6th in the "Pre PON" event in 1998. However, there were so many competitors in the world of bodybuilding that he resolved to move to Jakarta instead, hoping to pioneer a career in entertainment and to act as a trainer at a fitness centre. 'Agung Hercules', as he styled himself, became very famous in Indonesia after releasing the self-penned single "Astuti" (featured here) in 2003 following successful exposure on YouTube. Using that name, he had been notable early on while playing the role of 'Milky Man' in the soap opera "Saras 008", which ran from 1998 to the year 2000. (His character was a heroic type who often helped Saras fight against his sworn enemy.) His higher profile following the success of the first single led to him getting an offer to play in a dramatic movie by the director/screenwriter Monty Tiwa entitled "Test Pack" (2012). During this film, based on a novel by Ninit Yunita, he appeared alongside Reza Rahadian, Acha Septriasa and Renata Kusmanto. In later years, he also ran a popular food business called "Bakso Barbel" ("Barbecued Meatballs"). Agung Hercules died from the effects of a glioblastoma brain cancer at Dharmais Hospital, Jakarta, on August 1st 2019, aged 51. He had received a diagnosis relating to this several months earlier. † REST IN PEACE †
Hundreds of very talented musicians pass away each year, some without much recognition at all. On "Rest In Peace", I aim to give them a fitting 'send-off', with a decent Tribute. I hope you will join me in marking their passing.....
