Free Love
by Anca Pop
Anca Pop (1984 to 2018) was a Romanian-Canadian singer/songwriter. Anca Pop was born on October 22nd 1984 in Moldova Noua, Caras-Severin, Banat, Romania. When she was three however, her parents decided to flee political persecution in Romania, crossing the River Danube into Serbia where they applied for political asylum. After staying in a camp for seven months, they were allowed to emigrate to Canada and, after settling in Ontario, she began to take a fervent interest in music. At the age of seven, she started to learn to play the mandolin and took up singing, though her parents eventually moved them back to Romania. She only decided her future would be in Canada when a 'demo' she had recorded was heard in 2004 by '604 Records' chairman Jonathan Simkin, and he encouraged her to write enough songs for an eventual debut solo album to be issued. While still back in Romania, Pop used her country of birth for inspiration, and in 2008 met a musician from Bosnia and Herzegovina called Goran Bregovic, who helped compose various songs for her future releases. In 2012, she brought out the minor singles "Go to Her", "Soul Cancer" and "When the World Is Mine", whilst also duetting with Bregovic on "Jealous Monster" in the same year. She launched the single "Free Love" in April 2015, with a music video coming out on the same day (it's featured here). It was particularly successful in the UK, being voted by more than 100,000 people as the 'Best Pop Song' for July that year in a survey conducted by the website "OurStage". Then, in March 2016, the follow-up "Super Cool" was issued, and in May of the same year she was invited by 'Warner Music Group' to accompany musician and choreographer Emil Reng to the Cannes Film Festival in France - a "photo opportunity" aimed at securing long-term cooperation with the Group's record label. Pop then made a cameo appearance in the video for the song "Click Click", by Reng's band 'RENGLE', when it was published on May 23rd 2016. She released her next single, "Ring Around" in January 2017, then travelled to perform several concerts across different cities in Japan. After appearing for a second time by request of 'Warner Music Group' at the Cannes Film Festival in France in the May, another single, "Loco Poco", came out internationally days later. Her self-titled album was finally issued in July 2017, but would be her only one due to her wish to start her own record label and therefore terminate her existing contract with 'WMG'. Tragically though, Anca Pop died on December 17th 2018, after apparently losing control of her car near Svinita and being trapped as it plunged into the River Danube. She was just 34, and had been travelling home to spend Christmas holidays with her family. http://nypost.com/2018/12/18/singer-songwriter-anca-pop-dies-in-danube-river-car-crash/

† REST IN PEACE †
Hundreds of very talented musicians pass away each year, some without much recognition at all. On "Rest In Peace", I aim to give them a fitting 'send-off', with a decent Tribute. I hope you will join me in marking their passing.....
