Amor de Agua Fresca
by Dina
Dina (1956 to 2019) was a Portuguese popular singer and composer. Ondina Maria Farias Veloso was born on June 18th 1956 in Carregal do Sal, Viseu, Portugal. During her adolescence, she acted in a number of college plays, but soon realised that her talent lay more in the direction of music. After putting together her first compositions, she joined a group called 'Quinteto Angola' in 1975 and enjoyed some success with them as a vocalist, using her own compositions. She also recorded two EPs for the record label division of the 'Radio Triunfo' broadcaster. However (calling herself just 'Dina'), she was probably best-known during her lifetime for her participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 1992 in Malmo, Sweden. She had first entered the Portuguese Eurovision selection competition ("Festival da Cancao") in 1980, finishing eighth with "Guardando em Mim", and tried again in the same qualification contest in 1982 with two songs, but could only manage sixth and eighth. She finally got her big chance in 1992, when her song "Amor de Agua Fresca" (featured here) won the trial competition and went forward to the 37th Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden as the Portuguese representative. Sadly though, "Amor de Agua Fresca" finished 17th out of 23 entries, but this did not diminish Dina's personal sense of achievement and determination. During her career, she released six albums as a performer but also became a composer of themes and incidental music for many film and TV drama productions. She still continued to perform though, and in September 2009 celebrated 30 years in the music business with a concert at the Teatro Sao Luiz in Lisbon. As a sufferer from pulmonary fibrosis since 2006, this finally ended her singing career in 2016. Dina died from complications of her condition in Lisbon on April 11th 2019, aged 62. Hundreds of very talented musicians pass away each year, some without much recognition at all. On "Rest In Peace", I aim to give them a fitting 'send-off', with a decent Tribute. I hope you will join me in marking their passing.....
