Hymne Cherifien (national anthem)
by lyricist Ali Squalli Houssaini
Ali Squalli Houssaini (1932 to 2018) was a Moroccan writer, academic and anthem lyricist. Ali Squalli Houssaini was born in 1932 in Fez, Morocco. He studied at Qarouiyine University before going on to teach literature in 1951, but five years later in 1956 he joined the Royal Cabinet. He then became an adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before opting to accept an appointment back in the education sector in 1964 as professor at the Faculte des Lettres et des Sciences Humaines in Rabat. In 1992, having already authored many books, he received the Saudi King Faisal International Prize for Children's Literature, and was latterly an inspector at the Ministry of National Education (a job he fulfilled right up until his death). Perhaps his most notable role however was in writing the lyrics to the national anthem of Morocco, "Hymne Cherifien", in 1970. Houssaini's lyrics, translated into English, are:

Fountain of Freedom, Source of Light, Where sovereignty and safety meet, Safety and sovereignty, May you ever combine! You have lived among nations with title sublime, Filling each heart, Sung by each tongue, Your champion has risen, And answered your call.

For your soul and your body, The victory they have conquered. In my mouth, And in my blood, Your breezes have stirred, Both light and fire. Up! my brethren, Strive for the highest.

We call to the world, That we are here ready. We salute as our emblem, God, Homeland, and King.

Ali Squalli Houssaini died from an undisclosed incurable disease in Rabat on November 5th 2018, aged 86. [ Translated from: ]

Hundreds of very talented musicians pass away each year, some without much recognition at all. On "Rest In Peace", I aim to give them a fitting 'send-off', with a decent Tribute. I hope you will join me in marking their passing.....
