M-am Suit in Dealul Clujului
by Maria Butaciu
Maria Butaciu (1940 to 2018) was a Romanian 'folk' singer. Maria Butaciu was born on February 19th 1940 in Salva, Bistrita-Nasaud, Romania. After attending the Music High School in Cluj, she started her musical career with the Cluj Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 1961 won a place in the 'Ciocarlia Ensemble' belonging to the government Interior Ministry based in Bucharest, working with them until they were dissolved in 1970. In 1963, she was the winner of the 8th Helsinki World Youth and Students Festival singing competition, and in 1970 she became a soloist with the 'Ensemble Folclorique Rapsodia Romana'. Although versed in many kinds of Balkan 'folk' music, her speciality was as an interpreter of songs from her own Bistrita-Nasaud birthplace and its environs, and Butaciu released numerous recordings over nearly six decades. Among the hundreds of songs she issued over her lifetime were such popular choices as "Firule, Mai Fir de Iarba", "M-am dus din Ardealul meu", "Un Leac Pentru Suflet", "Rau ma Doare Inima", "Cucule, Pasare Draga", "Povestea Puiului de Cerb", "Dupa Deal Rasare Luna", "Bade, Palarie Noua" and "Aoleu, ce Ploaie Vine de la Cluj". During her career, she collaborated with such venerable Romanian conductors as Constantin Arvinte, Ion Margean, Paraschiv Oprea, Victor Predescu, George Vancu and Alexandru Viman, and in 2001 she was awarded the title "Honorary Citizen of Bucharest". Maria Butaciu died after a cardio-respiratory arrest at the Floreasca Hospital in Bucharest on June 11th 2018, at the age of 78. [Translated from: ]

Hundreds of very talented musicians pass away each year, some without much recognition at all. On "Rest In Peace", I aim to give them a fitting 'send-off', with a decent Tribute. I hope you will join me in marking their passing.....
