Eu To Tranquilao
by MC Sapao
MC Sapao (1978 to 2019) was a Brazilian 'funk carioca' singer. MC Sapao was born Jefferson Luiz Fernandes in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 12th 1978. Born and raised in the community of Nova Brasilia (Complexo do Alemao), his artistic name 'Sapao' had developed as a nickname in childhood due to his wide-eyed look. At the age of 18 however, he spent eight months in jail for connections to drug trafficking, but was later acquitted because there was no evidence against him. While in prison, he composed a song for his mother called "Eu Sei Cantar" (he promised her at the time that he would use his songwriting talent only to do good). As a major exponent of the 'funk carioca' genre, he mixed melodic vocals with influences of 'soul', and among his major successes were "Mocinho e Bandido" (alongside fellow artistes Joao Neto and Frederico), "Deixa Ela Dancar", "Vou Desafiar Voce" and "Rei do Baile" (with MC Guime and Mr Catra). In 2005, Sapao released his first big hit, "Diretoria", which was played extensively on the main radio stations of Rio, and the following year he recorded the album "Eu To Tranquilao" on 'Indie Records' (the title track was a big hit, and is featured here). Also in 2006, his song "Boladao - Grito de um Guerreiro" was included on the "Funk Mix" compilation CD, produced by DJ Marlboro for the record company 'Som Livre'. In 2014, he recorded the single "Vou Desafiar Voce" and released it in December of that year. It was a resounding success, garnering more than 30 million views on YouTube alone. MC Sapao died from pneumonia in Rio de Janeiro on April 19th 2019, aged just 40. [ Translated from: ]

Hundreds of very talented musicians pass away each year, some without much recognition at all. On "Rest In Peace", I aim to give them a fitting 'send-off', with a decent Tribute. I hope you will join me in marking their passing.....
