Derdim Var!
by Ozan Arif, aka Arif Sirin
Arif Sirin (1949 to 2019) was a Turkish 'folk' singer and composer, aka Ozan Arif. Arif Sirin was born in Yukselen, Alucra, Turkey, on June 10th 1949. After graduating from the Male Teacher's School in Ordu Province, he worked as a primary school teacher in Samsun from 1970 to 1979. However, following the 1980 Turkish national "coup d'etat", he moved to Frankfurt, Germany, to live - initially exiled abroad because of his different political creed, he was finally allowed to return to Turkey in 1991. Although he had first cultivated some considerable celebrity as a 'baglama' performer, his subsequent self-composed songs were often peppered with lyrics propagating the Turkish nationalist cause. Partially through this tendency, he and his fellow 'folk' singer Ismail Turut were put on trial in 2007 for composing and publishing a song allegedly praising the assassination of the Turkish-Armenian intellectual and journalist Hrant Dink in that year (they were finally acquitted of the charge in December 2009). During his lifetime, his talent for lyrics-based verse also won him many prizes in Turkish folk poetry competitions, including a three-year straight success in the Konya Asiklar Bayrami contest from 1976 to 1978. Arif Sirin died from throat cancer at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Mayis in Samsun Ondokuz on February 13th 2019. He was 52, and leaves children raised with his wife Suheyla, who he had first met while at teachers' school. [ Translated from: ]

Hundreds of very talented musicians pass away each year, some without much recognition at all. On "Rest In Peace", I aim to give them a fitting 'send-off', with a decent Tribute. I hope you will join me in marking their passing.....
