Gangnam Style
by Quan Minyu
CATCH-UP: Quan Minyu (2004 to 2016) was a Chinese 'reality show' singer. Quan Minyu was born in Yanji, Jilin Province, China, in 2004. His musical talent first surfaced in 2011 when he performed a cover of the global hit "Gangnam Style" on several Chinese television talent shows (including "Chinese Dream Show", represented in this selection), and repeated the performance on "Star King", the star search show put out by the South Korean network 'Seoul Broadcasting System'. These appearances earned him the nickname 'Little Psy' (in homage to the originator of the song, the South Korean 'K-pop' star 'Psy'). Tragically, Quan was diagnosed with a brainstem glioma in August 2014 (in effect, a brain tumour), and came back to South Korea that year to seek treatment, including chemotherapy. There followed the documentary "Hogisim Iyagi Y", a TV programme shown there which told of his passion for 'Psy', as well as the struggle with his illness. After seemingly getting worse in May 2015, Quan was taken back to China in the July by his family, so they could continue home care in preparation for the last moments of his life. On February 8th 2016, he was brought to hospital in Yanbian suffering breathing problems. He immediately received emergency treatment, but it did not help, and Quan Minyu died there from the effects of his illness on February 9th 2016. He was just 12 years old.

Hundreds of very talented musicians pass away each year, some without much recognition at all. On "Rest In Peace", I aim to give them a fitting 'send-off', with a decent Tribute. I hope you will join me in marking their passing.....
