Something Inside Of Me
by Smokey Wilson
CATCH-UP: Smokey Wilson (1936 to 2015) was an American 'blues' guitarist. Robert Lee Wilson was born in Glen Allan, Mississippi, USA, on July 11th 1936, and raised in Lake Village, Arkansas. He played alongside Roosevelt 'Booba' Barnes, Big Jack Johnson and Frank Frost, before he moved to Los Angeles in 1970. He opened the Pioneer Club in Watts, where he was the 'frontman' of their house band. In addition, his duties included booking 'blues' musicians to appear at the club, which often included Big Joe Turner, Percy Mayfield, Pee Wee Crayton and Albert Collins. His down to earth guitar playing was considered typical of his Mississippi Delta background. Wilson released two albums on 'Big Town Records' in the 1970s, and his 1983 album, "88th Street Blues", for the 'Murray Brothers' label (later re-issued on 'Blind Pig Records') had contributions from Rod Piazza (harmonica and record producer) and Hollywood Fats (rhythm guitar). He performed three times at the 'Long Beach Blues Festival' - in 1980, 1981 and 1999 - having earlier appeared at the 'San Francisco Blues Festival' in 1978. Two more albums, "Smoke N' Fire" (1993) and "The Real Deal" (1995) followed, as his reputation began to grow around his sixtieth birthday. Though his residency at the Pioneer Club did little to gain him recognition, he did appear on the 'PBS' special, "Three Generations of Blues", with Robert Cray and John Lee Hooker. He also featured in various television commercials, including UPN's "The Watcher" and FOX's "Divas", plus in a music video made by 'Babyface'. Smokey Wilson died in his sleep at home in Los Angeles on September 8th 2015, aged 79.

Hundreds of very talented musicians pass away each year, some without much recognition at all. On "Rest In Peace", I aim to give them a fitting 'send-off', with a decent Tribute. I hope you will join me in marking their passing.....
