Hans Grotzer (1928 to 2019) was an Austrian violinist, concertmaster and academic. Hans Grotzer was born on July 5th 1928 in Vienna, Austria. He studied violin with Professor Nemeth in Vienna, and at the young age of 17 participated as a member of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. He then joined the orchestra of the Wiener Staatsoper from 1946 to 1955, and of the Wiener Volksopernorchester from 1955 to 1993, becoming concertmaster for the latter from 1966. From the 1950s, he had also played on the radio in the 'ORF Big Band', and further participated in the broadcaster's television productions by providing backing for such names as Peter Alexander, Caterina Valente, Freddy Quinn and Harald Juhnke (among others). In addition, he was first violinist on many recordings by the Vienna Biedermeier String Quartet alongside Kurt Sowinetz, Andre Heller and Georg Danzer. During his lifetime, he received awards which included the "Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art 1st Class" and the "Decoration of Merit for the City of Vienna", and in 2003 was given the "Silver Medal of Honor of the Capital Vienna". On the occasion of his final retirement in 1993, he had been appointed an honorary member of the Wiener Volksoper. Hans Grotzer died in Austria on March 14th 2019, aged 90.
