Adventures of Super Rhymes
by Jimmy Spicer
Jimmy Spicer (1958 to 2019) was an American 'rap' artist. James Bromley Spicer was born on May 12th 1958 in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He first became known after releasing the 'hip-hop' track "Adventures of Super Rhymes" on 'Dazz Records' in 1979 (it's featured here today). This thirteen minute long song contained some extremely visual and imaginative storytelling, and he became widely-credited as a precursor to other significant 'rap' storytellers, including 'Slick Rick' and 'Dana Dane'. Although he was briefly signed to 'Def Jam Records' by co-founder Rick Rubin, his sole minor success on that label was the single "Beat the Clock", and he soon began to slip into obscurity. He did appear on the television show "20/20" in about 1985 (rapping somewhat mysteriously about the artist Keith Haring). The "old school" 'rap' singles he did issue during the late 1970s and early 1980s included the 1982 'Mercury' single "The Bubble Bunch" (a first remix by 'Jellybean Benitez'), during his time with Russell Simmons' 'Rush Management'. However, probably his best-known work, the "tap" classic "Dollar Bill Y'all", was released in 1983 on 'Spring Records'. During his later return from exile, 'Def Valley Records' released the 12-inch single "I Rock Boots" in 1990, and in 2010 his track "$ Can't Buy U Luv (Money Can't Buy You Love)" was issued on the 'Spice Rhymes'' label. Sadly though, in 2018 he was diagnosed with advanced brain and lung cancer. Jimmy Spicer died from these medical conditions in Brooklyn on September 27th 2019, at the age of 61. He leaves four daughters and one son. http://hiphopdx.com/news/id.52970/title.jimmy-spicers-family-launches-gofundme-to-make-final-days-as-peaceful-as-possible

† REST IN PEACE † ✚
Hundreds of very talented musicians pass away each year, some without much recognition at all. On "Rest In Peace ✚", I aim to give them a fitting 'send-off', with a decent Tribute. I hope you will join me in marking their passing.....
