by Sulli
Sulli (1994 to 2019) was a South Korean singer, with 'f(x)', songwriter and actress. Sulli was born Choi Jin-ri in Busan, South Korea, on March 29th 1994. She made her debut when just a child, acting in a supporting cast member role on the 'SBS' historical drama "Ballad of Seodong" in 2005. Following this, she earned a number of guest roles during such television shows as "Love Needs a Miracle" (2005) and "Drama City" (2007), as well as in the film "Vacation" (2006). Her subsequent movie appearances included the independent films "Punch Lady" (2007) and "BA:BO" (2008). (The former movie was her first time being cast in a substantial dramatic character role.) After then signing a record deal with 'SM Entertainment', Sulli rose to prominence in the South Korean music business as a member of the girl group 'f(x)', which formed in 2009. Together they achieved both critical and commercial success, achieving four South Korean No. 1 singles (they also received international recognition after becoming the first 'K-pop' act to perform at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, USA). While steadily continuing her music career, she also returned to acting in 2012 by starring in the 'SBS' romantic comedy series "To the Beautiful You", a Korean adaptation of the popular 'shojo manga' "Hana-Kimi". Her performance was positively received and earned her two "SBS Drama Awards" plus a nomination for the 49th "Paeksang Arts Awards". Sulli's film career progressed further when, in 2014, she starred in both the fantasy swashbuckler "The Pirates" and the coming-of-age drama "Fashion King". While doing press tours for the former film, she took a hiatus from the entertainment industry (due to health issues), finally leaving 'f(x)' in August 2015 after a long period of absence from the group. Instead, between 2015 and 2017 she embarked on a number of modelling campaigns, culminating in a role as global brand ambassador for a major cosmetics company. She did receive renewed positive attention for her role in the experimental 'neo-noir' thriller "Real" in 2017, and a year later attempted a return to the music industry when making a guest appearance on "Dayfly" (the single by fellow countryman and singer Dean). She finally released her debut solo single ("Goblin", featured here) in June 2019 - sadly though, this was to be her last musical project prior to her death. Sulli committed suicide in Seongnam on October 14th 2019, aged only 25. She had suffered a recent history of very negative feedback on social media, which may have played a part in her final actions.

Hundreds of very talented musicians pass away each year, some without much recognition at all. On "Rest In Peace ✚", I aim to give them a fitting 'send-off', with a decent Tribute. I hope you will join me in marking their passing.....
