The Walk
by The Cure, feat. Andy Anderson, drums
Andy Anderson (1951 to 2019) was an English 'rock' drummer, with 'The Cure'. Clifford Leon Anderson was born in West Ham, east London, England, on January 30th 1951. Known professionally as 'Andy' Anderson while a drummer, he was probably best-known for his work with 'The Cure' and Steve Hillage. However, he first started out seriously in music playing on "Xitintoday", a studio album released by former 'Hawkwind' member Nik Turner and his 'Sphynx' line-up in 1978 (produced by Hillage). After joining Hillage's backing band, he appeared on two 1979 albums, "Live Herald" and "Open", following which he spent a few years as a session musician (Anderson had a brief stint in 'Hawkwind' in 1983, but did not record with them). Also in 1983, he played for the 'post-punk' collaboration 'The Glove' on their one and only album "Blue Sunshine" (the project was an amalgam of 'The Cure' frontman Robert Smith and the 'Banshees' Steve Severin). Later that year, when Smith's original drummer Lol Tolhurst moved to keyboards for 'The Cure', he was drafted in to play drums. He recorded on their albums "Japanese Whispers", "The Top" and "Concert", as well as the singles "Love Cats" and "The Caterpillar". He was credited on recordings by many other bands and artists too, such as 'Techno Twins', 'M/Robin Scott', Jimmy Pursey, 'Mother Gong', Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Steve Vengeance, 'Two-Bit Thief', 'The Saints', 'Backbeats', Martha Munizzi, 'Group 1 Crew', 'The Gun Club', 'Spirits Burning & Clearlight', and 'Beat The System' (the last one while acting as their producer). Anderson's other more notable collaborations included 'Brilliant', 'The Edgar Broughton Band', Edwyn Collins, 'The Cureheads', Jason Donovan, Peter Gabriel, Isaac Hayes, Iggy Pop, 'The Last Poets', 'Levinhurst', Glenn Matlock, Steve New, Nik Turner's 'Inner City Unit', Mike Oldfield, Jimmy Somerville, Midge Ure, Jenn Vix, Harry Williamson, Martin Glover ('Youth') and Zeke Manyika. In addition to his work as a session musician, he was also a producer of television commercials and did much valuable work for record companies and charities. Having been diagnosed with terminal cancer in February of 2019, Andy Anderson died at his home in London on February 26th 2019, aged 68.

Hundreds of very talented musicians pass away each year, some without much recognition at all. On "Rest In Peace ✚", I aim to give them a fitting 'send-off', with a decent Tribute. I hope you will join me in marking their passing.....
