Up Against the Wall (live)
by Tom Robinson Band, feat. Danny Kustow, lead guitar
Danny Kustow (1955 to 2019) was an English 'rock' guitarist, with 'Tom Robinson Band'. Alexander Daniel Kustow was born in Hammersmith, London, England, on May 10th 1955, the son of an NHS GP who had served with the British Army's Royal Army Medical Corps during World War 2. He spent his childhood in Willesden but, after being expelled from King Alfred School in Golders Green at the age of 13, was sent to a corrective residential educational establishment in Kent a year later (it was here that Kustow began playing the guitar, and first met Tom Robinson). After perfecting his skills on the guitar in the early 1970s, and heavily influenced by the work of the British 'blues' guitarist Alexis Korner, he commenced his professional career in late 1976 amidst London's 'punk rock' scene, becoming lead guitarist with the 'Tom Robinson Band'. Despite their politically radical agenda, his own primary personal musical ambition was just to be a successful "rock star". After an initial No. 5 hit in the UK charts with the single release "2-4-6-8 Motorway" in October 1977, the band recorded their debut LP "Power in the Darkness" (released in 1978). However, they sadly broke up in October 1979 after their second album, entitled "TRB Two", had come out in that year. From the beginning of the 1980s, Kustow went on to play variously with 'The Spectres' and 'The Planets', then subsequently worked as a "guitar for hire", during this time recording with 'Generation X' on their album release "Kiss Me Deadly" in 1981. In the mid-1980s, he worked again with Robinson on such songs as "War Baby", and also performed with the band 'Time UK'. In the late 1980s, he appeared 'live' with a temporarily reformed 'Tom Robinson Band', and played on their LP release "Winter of '89" in 1992, after which he promptly retired from professional music. However, he briefly came out of retirement in October 2017 to perform the song "2-4-6-8 Motorway" at a Tom Robinson gig at London's 100 Club. Since withdrawing from music, he had resided near the city of Bath in Bathford, Somerset, having become somewhat of a recluse. Danny Kustow died from pneumonia at the city's Royal United Hospital on March 11th 2019, at the age of 63.

Hundreds of very talented musicians pass away each year, some without much recognition at all. On "Rest In Peace ✚", I aim to give them a fitting 'send-off', with a decent Tribute. I hope you will join me in marking their passing.....
