Serve the Servants
by Nirvana
Live on MTV Live and Loud, this the opening salvo from Nirvana's only post fame LP and probably Kurt's most straightforwardly autobiographical song. To wit, it starts with a pithy career summary "teenage angst has paid off well now I'm bored and old", veers into a commentary on music critics ("self appointed judges judge more than they have sold"), comments on his anger on the Media's treatment of Courtney Love particularly in the Vanity Fair article ("if she floats she is not a witch like we thought"), talks about his oft discussed scoliosis in his back ('as my bones grew they did hurt") and also includes a note of forgiveness for his father, the subject of yesterday's track ("I just want you to know that I don't hate you anymore".) The legendary divorce was supposedly because the media kept asking him about his parent's separation in trying to psychoanalyze him. People have also noted that the loud verse and quiet chorus is to some extent an inversion of the loud/quiet/loud pattern they were famous for (which Kurt said they just ripped off Pixies in doing). (The Vanity Fair article is at http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2016/03/love-story-of-kurt-cobain-courtney-love )
