My Boyfriend's Back
by The Angels
I have no specific knowledge of this group or song, other than occasionally hearing it on TV and radio back in the early Sixties, just as the Swinging era was breaking. To be honest, it was not a style of music which grabbed my interest much back then as a nine-year-old, but I did come to appreciate this kind of vocal harmony much more in my adult years to follow.

For now, just sit back, play the video and enjoy their boyfriend coming back. I know I will.

'The Angels':
:: After an audition with the 'Caprice' label (while known as 'The Starlets'), their recording of a song called "Till" was shelved by the company. Sisters Barbara and Phyllis Allbut went back into education - Phyllis entered a teacher's college and Barbara studied musical arranging at the Juilliard School in New York. Meanwhile, the folk at 'Caprice' suddenly realised the song's hit potential, and asked them to record it again in the studio - it became their first single under a new name, 'The Angels'. ...
:: By 1963, the Feldman-Goldstein-Gottehrer songwriting team had come up with a song called "My Boyfriend's Back", and they originally intended it as a single for the already-famous female vocal group 'The Shirelles'. However, the label 'Smash Records' instead chose to release it as sung by their new talent 'The Angels', and it became the girls' biggest hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. ...
:: After leaving 'Smash' and signing to 'Congress Records', they had to change their name to 'The Halos' following a dispute over the ownership of their old title. Although this settled line-up released several more singles, none of them charted, and the band began to disintegrate in 1965 (they finally split in 1968).

In #1963 :
:: An un-named cyclone hit the Bay of Bengal, India, on May 28th - around 22,000 people were killed and approximately one million basic-build houses were destroyed. ...
:: On September 8th of this year, 35-year-old Ines Cuervo de Prieto, a Venezuelan housewife, gave birth to Latin America's second set of surviving quintuplets ... all of them boys. ...
:: New US president Lyndon Baines Johnson set up the Warren Commission on November 29th - its remit was to investigate the public assassination of his predecessor John Fitzgerald Kennedy a week earlier in Dallas, Texas, amid many rumours of political conspiracy.

For a few years in the 1960s, London was the world capital of cool, reflecting all things hip and fashionable which had been growing in the popular British imagination throughout the decade. Music was also a huge part of London's swing - Liverpool had 'The Beatles' and the London sound was a mix of bands like 'The Who', 'The Kinks', the 'Small Faces' and 'The Rolling Stones'. Hopefully, you'll catch a flavour of all this from my posts here.
