The Prince
by Madness
On 10 August 1979, the #Debuts single from Madness was issued, kick-starting a career that (barring the odd hiatus or three inbetween) continues to this day with almost the same line-up (barring the odd departure and return or seven over the years). Cathal Smyth/Chas Smash is still currently absent, having left in 2014 to make his solo album, A Comfortable Man, before later undergoing successful surgery to remove a brain tumour in 2017.

On the UK chart dated 1 September 1979, 'The Prince' entered at No. 74, eventually peaking at No. 16 five weeks later, assisted by the band's first couple of appearances on Top Of The Pops, a clip of the second of which has been posted here before on a couple of occasions by @mloup - https://www.godsjukebox.com/mloup/madness-the-prince/.

As with The Beat later in the year, this would be their only release on the 2 Tone label, quickly being offered a deal and signing with Stiff after being hired by the owner Dave Robinson to play(/audition) at his wedding. All but one of their next 16 singles would subsequently hit the UK Top Ten - the only exception being the Radio 1-blacklisted 'Cardiac Arrest'.

The song was written by saxophonist, and occasional vocalist, Lee Thompson as a tribute to Prince Buster, whose own track 'Madness' both gave the band their name (having previously been known as The North London Invaders and Morris And The Minors) as well as the B-side to this 7" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2-UbNk8hGw. Each of them were then re-recorded for inclusion on the début album One Step Beyond..., released on 19 October 1979.
