Knocks Me Off My Feet
by Stevie Wonder

I have a pal I meet up with every couple of months and we lend each other a few cd’s to listen to. It’s usually stuff like, “Wishbone Ash - Rarities & Outtakes Vol 12”, “The Punk Rock Chicken in a Basket Nostalgia Fest Boxset” or “The Best Shoegaze, Miserabilist, Indie Album in the World Ever”.

Anyway, last time we met he pressed Stevie Wonder’s ‘Songs in the Key of Life’ into my sweaty palm. “Av a listen to this, he said ...it’s awesome.”

I was only familiar with Mr Wonder’s chart hits, so I said to him, “If it’s got that bloody birthday song on or the one about phoning someone up to tell ‘em that you love ‘em you can chuff off.”
“No, he said, but it will give your ear/brain connection a bloody good workout.”

Well he wasn’t kidding. There’s no way my walnut sized grey matter would’ve been ready for this album back when it was released in 1976. It’s an absolute revelation. For a double album not to have at least one duff track on is some achievement. I particularly like this one as Stevie plays all the instruments. The hi-hat alone is a master class of musicianship.

So, 4 decades after everyone else I’m having my Wonder years.

Big thanks to @aberrantanna for suggesting #stevieweek
