Mantra

Holy cow! Has it really been an entire year since my last post? Time flies when you're... hmm. Best not discuss how little I've been doing and just move on.

I think I've re-written my thoughts about this song 5 times now (I managed to work Steve Albini into my comments three of those times) but I can't really get what I want to say right.

I want to talk about how great Jazz is right now and if you're not listening you're missing out. The style is going through one of it's periodic creative growth spurts and there are a lot of fantastic albums that have come out in the last few years.

And I want to talk about how this relates back to the death of the music industry and (more importantly) the death of smooth jazz. It's like the record companies producing jazz kept the music locked into rigid forms for the purpose of selling to these limited markets and now that there is nothing sustaining those markets musicians are taking the chance to experiment and expand the form. And we're all the better for it because heck, just listen to this damn album. It is challenging, thoughtful, and listenable.
