Open Up Wide
by Chase
Continuing with #brassweek and #bigbandweek with a fiery fanfare of blazing jazz rock from Bill Chase and his early 1970s band Chase. Although an octet with four trumpets isn't technically a big band, Chase was much more of a stripped down, rock-inspired jazz big band than, say, early Chicago or Blood Sweat & Tears.

And there are similarities between Bill Chase and Maynard Ferguson (see yesterday's entry: http://www.godsjukebox.com/iMatthew/maynard-ferguson-l-dopa/ ). Both Ferguson and Chase started out as dynamic trumpeters with incredible power and range in big jazz bands. Maynard became famous in the 1950s as lead trumpet with Stan Kenton before starting his own band in the 1960s. Chase played trumpet with both Maynard Ferguson and Stan Kenton's bands in the late 1950s, and then became famous playing lead trumpet in Woody Herman's Thundering Herd.

This first Chase album had a few hits, especially Get It On. And the first 9 minuets of the 14 minuet suite Invitation to a River ( https://youtu.be/Ft3f3bNlKcM ) is a tour de force of straight ahead jazz with great melodies and a funky, psychedelic jazz-rock section followed by a swirling trumpet solo played through an echoplex (like the beginning of Open Up Wide). Later, with a different line-up, Chase became more of a horn-based jazz funk band (they toured in 1973 with Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters). But tragedy struck in 1974 when most of the band died in a plane crash on the way to a gig. Big loss.
