Nothing Compares 2 U
by Chris Cornell
I'm at an absolute loss right now. I mean, to say I'm in disbelief is an understatement of epic proportions. I'm stunned, floored, ANGRY.

Purple Rain came out the year I turned 10. I grew up listening to 1999, Purple Rain and Parade; Sign O' the Times and Lovesexy. I even had the Batman soundtrack. I lost track of his releases around the time of his name change, but when I was in my late teens and early 20's I went back and explored his early stuff. I Wanna Be Your Lover and Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad made their way onto my mix CD's.

I saw Prince live in 1998 when he was doing the New Power Soul tour. Doug E. Fresh guested and Chaka Kahn opened. I've told this story around here before but it was the most disappointing concert experience I've ever had. I'd looked forward to seeing him live for as long as a I could remember so I had really high expectations. It was Prince! How could it fail to be amazing? Well, it wasn't amazing. Prince rushed through several melodies like someone playing a 33 at 45. In my memory he was only on stage for about 20 minutes. It was probably longer, but not by much. By the time we got to our car in the parking lot, his tour bus was driving away. If it had been anyone else I would have shrugged it off and gone on with my life. But I was devastated. Prince! Prince had let me down! If I hadn't adored him so much, I wouldn't have cared but I've never forgotten and never gotten over it. I also never got another chance to see him live.

This feels personal. It feels like a family member has died. My heart is broken. Fucking goddamnit.

I don't know what is going on with this year, if there is some sort of music apocalypse happening but this is too much. This is enough. Whatever tribute is owed must surely be fulfilled now.

Godspeed, RIP. Prince! How is this even happening?

I wish there was a way we could share our favorite Prince songs but as we all know his music is locked down on YouTube. If I could, I would post Erotic City, which is my absolute favorite of his and reminds me of late nights, driving around, dancing in clubs, youth.
