Playing the Game (Live)
by Gentle Giant

Happy 72nd birthday to Scottish musician and singer, multi-instrumentalist, and record executive Derek Shulman, best known for being lead singer of the progressive rock band Gentle Giant. Following his recording career he became a successful record executive, signing Bon Jovi, signing blues rock band Tangier, Dream Theater and Pantera and re-establishing the careers of AC/DC and Bad Company while president and CEO of Atco Records.

This is a live video from 1978 of Gentle Giant performing "Playing the Game," the fourth track from their sixth album "The Power and the Glory." The song was written by Kerry Minnear, Derek Shulman and Ray Shulman. Derek Shulman is shown singing lead and playing the Shulberry, a three stringed instrument used only to play this song in concert. Also in the clip Kerry Minnear on keyboards, Ray Shulman on guitar, Gary Green on lead guitar, and John Weathers on drums and percussion.

Here's a link to the studio version:

I have previously posted "Proclamation," the lead track from the same album:

"As I hold the key to the back door
of the world I feel my
Hand touching bounds never had before.
I can view the power of my position and my
eyes can see more than anyone in any place,
I'll play the game and never ever lose.

I'm the king in fighting competition
and the other pieces
are there for my art and my tactics now.
All my games are won before they're played for
I have planned that no opposition can stage a fight
I'll play the game and never ever lose.

My thoughts never spoken only the
visions inside my head the truth never broken
within my silent words left unsaid.

I will steer the helm of all the nation
as the captain
take my rewards for all the good I'm doing now,
and no words that I'm the knave will alter my
philosophy for if any are heard, the games started
again I'll never ever lose."
