You're a Lady
by Peter Skellern

#1972

A nice little biography/obituary for Peter Skellern can be found at the blog "Rock and Roll Paradise", run by Dutchman Johan "macamba" Ramakers:

Peter Skellern was born in Bury, Lancashire on March 14th 1947.

He played trombone in a school band and served as organist and choirmaster in a local church before attending the Guildhall School of Music, from which he graduated with honours in 1968. Because "I didn't want to spend the next 50 years playing Chopin," he joined the vocal harmony band 'March Hare' which, after changing their name to 'Harlan County', recorded a 'country-pop' album before disbanding in 1971.

Married with two children, Skellern worked as a hotel porter in Shaftesbury, Dorset, before music struck lucky at the end of 1972 with a self-composed UK No. 3 hit, "You're a Lady". The record featured 'The Congregation', who had previously recorded the Top Ten hit "Softly Whispering I Love You".

"You're a Lady" reached No. 3 on the UK Singles chart and No. 50 in the United States Billboard Hot 100, and sold several million copies worldwide.

Skellern died as a result of a brain tumour on February 17th 2017 at the age of 69, at Lanteglos-by-Fowey, Cornwall.

The chart info is all in there this time. Although not a big fan of Skellern or this track personally, I will always remember that he was a big favourite of my late mother.

Born in 1954, leaving education by 1972, 'glam' was my thing, "Ziggy" Bowie my hero. I was even the only guy in my town with the haircut (though not the carrot red colouring!). Therefore every seventh selection is a Bowie track.
