#DiscoInTheSeventies

The "Groovy History" website gives us the following on this catchy 'disco' number today:

_____________________________________________________

Thinking back to the groovy '70s, the band 'Silver Convention' may not immediately come to mind but their hit song "Fly, Robin, Fly" just might!

[It] was one of those songs that just seemed to rattle around in a person's head after hearing it. Surprisingly, there was nothing that notable about it and it was somewhat mindless. The lyrics were simple and repetitive and the vocalists were actually a throw-together group of background singers. 'Silver Convention' was created by a couple of guys named Silvester Levay and Michael Kunze. They literally walked into a music studio in 1975 and hand-picked some vocalists to perform another song called "Save Me". "Save Me" turned out to be successful enough to land them a recording contract and 'Silver Convention', as we knew it, was born.

[However,] "Fly, Robin, Fly" was initially supposed to be called "Run Rabbit, Run". In late 1975, "Fly, Robin, Fly" had climbed its way up the music charts, and 'Silver Convention' found itself in the spotlight. Up until this point, only a studio album had been released - 'live' gigs were in big demand and the band needed some stability and regular members. That is when [Linda G] Thompson, [Penny] McLean, and [Ramona] Wulf officially became the voices and faces of 'Silver Convention'.

A massive No. 1 hit in the US, on not only the Billboard Hot 100 but also their Hot Disco Singles and Hot Soul Singles listings - the Cash Box and Record World charts also included the group and the record at the top of their ratings.

Meanwhile, in the UK ... No. 28 - that's all. I personally do not remember this in any way from way back then.

Born in 1954, leaving education by 1972, 'glam' was my thing, "Ziggy" Bowie my hero. I was even the only guy in my town with the haircut (though not the carrot red colouring!). Therefore every seventh selection is a Bowie track.
