leejohnson's current selection is:
ABC
by The Jackson 5

#1970

A bunch of mainly one-line factoids concerning this tune follow, as gleaned by my reliable info back-up "Songfacts":

_____________________________________________________

This song was written and produced by a group of 'Motown' songwriters known as "The Corporation." They were: Freddie Perren, Fonce Mizell, Deke Richards and Berry Gordy Junior. Freddie Perren was a former schoolteacher, which probably influenced the "school" metaphors in the lyrics.

This became the Jackson 5's second [US] No. 1 hit by knocking out "Let It Be" by 'The Beatles'.

According to co-writer Freddie Perren, the music of this is the chorus of their previous hit, "I Want You Back".

After the Jacksons were signed to 'Motown', they moved to Hollywood for a year of rehearsals. Some lived with Berry Gordy, some with Diana Ross.

In 1991, 'rap' group 'Naughty by Nature' had a hit song called "O.P.P." which sampled this.

This appears in the Eddie Murphy film "Daddy Daycare".

During the song's break, where all instruments drop out except drums, the ascending yell that is heard is sampled from song "Cissy Strut" by the legendary New Orleans 'funk' band 'The Meters'.

This song was used in a large dance sequence in the Kevin Smith film "Clerks II". A major plot point happens near the end of it.

Chart-wise, the best it did in the UK during its 7-week Top 40 journey there was No. 8 on June 6th 1970. Whereas in its originating country of the US it reached No. 1, as already indicated in the fascinating drivel above.

Born in 1954, leaving education by 1972, 'glam' was my thing, "Ziggy" Bowie my hero. I was even the only guy in my town with the haircut (though not the carrot red colouring!). Therefore every seventh selection is a Bowie track.
