leejohnson's current selection is:
Shining Star
by The Manhattans

#1980

I don't know what a "Hump Day Slow Jam of the Week" is exactly, but that's what Riverfront Times journo Annie Zaleski posted this under on October 1st 2008. A single from the extreme end of the Seventies decade, it ably followed up their biggest commercial hit from 1976, "Kiss and Say Goodbye":

_____________________________________________________

The Singers: 'The Manhattans' formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1962. The outfit had its biggest chart hit with the No. 1 single "Kiss and Say Goodbye" in 1976, though 1980's "Shining Star" remains the group's signature song.

The Song: Not to be confused with the 'Earth, Wind & Fire' song of the same name, "Shining Star" sounds like an updated slice of 'Philly soul', with glossy strings and a jazzy guitar vamp laying the foundation for the sweet, simple lyrics.

Hipster Cachet: Gerald Alston, who took lead vocals on many of the group's songs after joining in 1970, appears on the 'Wu Tang Clan' 2007 album "8 Diagrams", contributing to the song "Stick Me for my Riches."

A significant hit in the USA which got to No. 5 in the Billboard Hot 100, though it only managed a No. 45 placing in the UK Singles chart. (Other multiple chart entries in the States were as follows: US Singles (Record World) - No. 4; US Adult Contemporary (Record World) - No. 9; US Black Oriented Singles (Record World) - No. 2; US Adult Contemporary (Billboard) - No. 21; US R&B Chart (Billboard) - No. 4; US Top 100 Singles (Cash Box) - No. 7; US Top 100 R&B (Cash Box) - No. 4. Impressive, huh?)

Born in 1954, leaving education by 1972, 'glam' was my thing, "Ziggy" Bowie my hero. I was even the only guy in my town with the haircut (though not the carrot red colouring!). Therefore every seventh selection is a Bowie track.
