Teenage Depression (Live on Supersonic 1977)
by Eddie and the Hot Rods
Barrie Masters, frontman of Canvey Island, UK, early punkers Eddie and the Hot Rods, passed today at age 63. Masters served as the band's singer from their formation in 1975 to their 1981 dissolution, as well as during all their formations to the present year, the band's sole constant.

"Eddie" was a mannequin the band used onstage but of whom they eventually tired, and it was dispensed with by the time of their second album. The title track of their debut LP Teenage Depression, released in 1976, provided the band with their first hit and is a staple of comprehensive UK punk anthologies to this day. Americans may be most familiar with it through its presence in the 1979 film Rock and Roll High School. The band released four albums in their 1976-1981 heyday, with four more coming between 1996 and 2011 including a reworking of their debut titled 35 Years of Teenage Depression.

The clip I've posted, a 1977 performance from the UK show Supersonic, is a twofer that also includes "All I Need Is Money" from that debut LP.

(Eddie and the Hot Rods hailing from the same locale as English pub rockers Dr. Feelgood, Hot Rods' guitarist Dave Higgs previously served with Feelgood vocalist Lee Brilleaux in The Fix (not to be confused with new wavers The Fixx), and the two bands' propulsive rhythms share many similarities as is evident if you follow the clip I've posted with the Feelgoods' 1975 "She Does It Right" performance on The Geordie Scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHm7uIC84YM)
