Master of Destruction
by Peter Perrett
Peter Perrett fronted hard-edged power-pop originals The Only Ones from 1976-82 after numerous years of bedsit songwriting, producing his best-known song with "Another Girl, Another Planet" (from the Only Ones' eponymous debut LP). Following his band's demise he led another combo, Peter Perrett and The One, from 1994-96 before largely vanishing again with the odd one-off appearance happening here and there. Perrett's pharmaceutical demons seemed to have gotten the better of him by the turn of the century, and it was almost shocking to see him emerge in 2017 with his first proper solo album How the West Was Won. It's a good album, my taste for it dampened probably unfairly by his namechecking Kim Kardashian in the opening track, and I dropped everything to buy a ticket for his US tour that fall. The tour was cancelled the same day I bought the ticket. I figured we'd seen the last of Perrett, but this year another record was announced; against all odds, Humanworld is twice the album its predecessor was, almost as if How the West Was Won was a practice run. Master of Destruction is buried deep on side two but is the album's showstopper. Any Only Ones fan will do good to pick up this album; it's on its way to becoming one of my favorite releases of the year.
