Seminal Boston indie band Pixies are three albums into their reunion phase, but the more interesting material is coming via a series of expanded reissues of their classic work. This is not happening chronologically and all of their work may not get this treatment, but I would love to see new editions of Bossanova (1990) and Trompe le Monde (1991). Currently I am enjoying last year’s 3-disc take on their pre-major label work: the 1987 debut EP Come on Pilgrim and 1988 full-length Surfer Rosa. Also included is a live set. I contend this anthology represents their juvenilia period and that Pixies is a rare indie band whose best work came after signing to a major, but that is not meant to slight these early releases; both the EP and Surfer Rosa include strongly noteworthy material. I’ve been playing Surfer Rosa a lot this week and “Bone Machine” is the track that’s stuck with me the most.
