The Last DJ
by Tom Petty
I got involved with my campus radio station in my sophomore year of college. At the time, it was an arm of our Student Media department, which also ran the newspaper and other on-campus publications. By FCC rules, however, we were a non-commercial station, which meant we couldn't outright run advertisements, so we were largely considered a money pit to our newspaper counterparts. Our equipment was old and tired, our budget was next to nothing, and most of us worked for free just to keep the lights on. I think I spent more time in that run-down studio than I did my dorm room, and I loved every minute of it.

Eventually, control of the station was moved to our Communication Arts department and it was considered a laboratory classroom for our broadcasting majors. The station took on an official format and broadcast clock along with a more Clear Channel-like model so that radio students could "prepare for the real world". The only way to get time in the studio was to be in the right program and registered in the right classes, which I was not. For those of us who literally worked there for the fun of it, the writing was on the wall. As my last subtle act of defiance, I ended my final shift by playing this song. It didn't fit our format at all, and that was kind of the point.

I get a lot of songs stuck in my head. Some reflect my thoughts or mood, while others are just plain catchy. I'll keep track of them here.
