Unmistakeable bassline, I’m sure you’ve heard before. Like me, you might think, oh yeah, sampled by Grandmaster Flash for the old school song “White Lines (Don’t Do It)”.
Well, we’d both be wrong.
The song was actually not sampled. It was lifted note-for-note by Sugar Hill Records’ house band without attribution. The song “White Lines (Don’t Do It)”, according to the label, is listed as being from Melle Mel & Grandmaster. No Flash in sight, because Flash had nothing to do with the record. He had left Sugar Hill before it even came out. It was a money grabbing bait-&-switch. 99 Records sued and won, but Sugar Hill Records shut down & they never collected a cent.

The line “slip in and out of phenomenon” was misheard as “something like a phenomenon”, which stuck, and has been referenced hundreds of times in other rap songs, and rock as well.

Fascinating history for a jaunty little tune. I guess all that’s left to say now is:
BASS!
