Here's to You
by Joan Baez
#historyjuke

This song was written by Ennio Morricone (music) and Joan Baez (lyrics), released in 1971 as part of the soundtrack of the film Sacco & Vanzetti, directed by Giuliano Montaldo.

Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were Italian-born American anarchists who were controversially convicted of murdering a guard and a paymaster during an armed robbery of the Slater and Morrill Shoe Company in Braintree, Massachusetts, on April 15, 1920. They were tried and convicted at trial amid a wave of anti-Italian and anti-immigrant bias. Many years of appeals followed; witnesses recanted their testimony, new evidence called into question a ballistics report relied upon at trial, a foreperson admitted racial bias during the jury's deliberations, and another person partially confessed to the robbery.

Despite this, no retrial was held. Sacco and Vanzetti's convictions were affirmed and in 1927, Massachusetts scheduled them for execution in the electric chair. Protests on their behalf were held in major cities across North America and Europe, as well as in Tokyo, Sydney, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Johannesburg, and Auckland. A flood of telegrams to the Governor of Massachusetts caused him to delay the death penalty while a three-man commission reviewed the case; it found no fault.

Sacco and Vanzetti were executed in the electric chair at Charlestown State Prison on August 23, 1927.
