Deep in the Dark
by Laura Branigan
#nodudevember
EDIT: #forgotten80s

Laura Branigan's producer, Jack White, liked to mine the European charts for hit melodies that he could turn into US hits. It worked for "Gloria" - an Italian hit which was given new lyrics and reached #2 on the US charts.

It didn't work so well for this borrowing of a melody from the 1981 Falco hit "Der Kommisar," which was given new lyrics to become "Deep in the Dark." Branigan's version was recorded in 1982 and was included on her "Branigan 2" album released in April of 1983. However, the Falco song was also recorded by After the Fire in 1982, and entered the US charts in February of 1983 - eventually peaking at #5.

This track was never released as a single and is now #weirdasswednesday material given how popular the other versions are in comparison. I found it in the Branigan box set which Spotify introduced me to, and which I've returned to fairly regularly since its release in September.
