by Laura Branigan
Laura Branigan's 1982 cover of an Italian pop hit got her to #2 in the US and #2 in the UK. 80s music is still popular in the US, but this song has had an unusual resurgence this year - as the theme song for the playoff run of the St. Louis Blues hockey team.

If you do not know the story, the Blues were the worst team in the NHL on January 3. At one point during the fall of 2018 two of their players got into a brawl during practice, and the team went out and adopted a therapy-dog in training to try to soothe the nerves in the locker room. They were a team that entered the season with high expectations, and the wheels had come off.

On January 6, the team had an off-night in Philadelphia, and a bunch of players went to a local bar to watch a football game. During the commercial breaks the bar's DJ was playing "Gloria" and several of the players got up to dance. The players decided to take the song with them and began to play it in the locker room. Wins started piling up and the management got in on it, playing Gloria on the arena speakers after wins. Soon fans carrying signs appeared at games reading "PLAY GLORIA!" The team ended the season on a 29-9-5 run - going from last place to making the playoffs. Tomorrow (Wednesday, June 12) they will play the Boston Bruins in Boston to see who wins the Stanley Cup.

I'm not a Blues fan per se, but I've always liked Laura Branigan and Gloria, and I hope the Blues - who have never been NHL champs - win tomorrow.
