thatguyaz's current selection is:
YYZ
by Rush
Almost exactly 4 years ago, I posted the live version of this song and said:

"Here's another song that's # BetterLive. Sure, you could listen to the 4 1/2-minute version on Rush's excellent Moving Pictures album, but why? The nearly 8-minute version on "Exit Stage Left" is functionally identical, save the mind-blowing Neil Peart drum solo inserted in the middle. There are times when I try to air drum along with Peart, just to remind myself how freaking amazing he is"

I still agree with that today, but I will share the album version as a tribute to the recently passed drummer from Rush, Neil Peart. I only select this version because it is played over this amazing CGI animation - one of the first animations I saw of this caliber - made by Bobby Standridge of Arlington, VA. Standridge is a drummer and digital artist, who used the cutting edge animation tools available to him in 2003-2004 to make this video a tribute to the band's 30th anniversary. This video rocked MySpace back in its day, and I've never forgotten it - part of the reason I keep YYZ loaded on my phone anytime I fly. In fact I was blasting it in my ears on approach to Boston Logan just last summer, my cross-country flight skimming over the water just a few dozen feet above the waves, as I looked out my window - looking for Peart on a giant kit in the middle of Boston Harbor.

Every single animated strike of a drum head matches the music, and I consider one of the best memories of the last time I saw Rush spotting Peart spinning his drumsticks during the breaks in this song (just as the animator shows here). RIP Neil.
